Dear Kingfish. I think I was able to fix you up so you are displayed as David “Kingfish” Kalmusky. If you’re still on that much-needed break please reply and let me know if you are ok with that.

Dear Kingfish: welcome! Thanks for dropping in. We only allow real names on this forum. No handles. Please go into your profile and see if you can change your display name. Perhaps your real first name and last with Kingfish in the middle. If not, please PM me and I can do that in the back end. Thanks.

oh, and how zippy is that Mac Studio for you. We have a 12 core cylinder going very well on Pro Tools in Studio B.

I send a test tone from my DAW to align threshold and output gain after getting things in the ballpark by ear. The pots are so accurate that I can manually match left and right by number and typically be within 0.1 dB anyway. But I like to log the results with the test tone as this is a tube compressor and may drift.

Thanks. The mike is a highly modified AKG C-24 in Blumlein. Ana is singing on the back of the mike with her guitar. Dave’s upright bass is also picked up on the back of the mike. Percussion and other instruments on the front of the mike. So I’ve positioned everyone optimally to get just the right balance and depth! A true one mike recording in a big, beautiful room.

There are some transforms available between binaural and miking for speakers. I recorded a jazz ensemble with my own custom binaural head. And I have access to all the close mikes. The piano is too soft and distant on the binaural. The question is whether I can convincingly mix in the close mikes to get a binaural mix. I’ve had to table the project as it’s too challenging right now to find the best tools for that.

Cool. I’ve used Blumlein with Omni outriggers to extend the angular pickup. Technically, it’s verboten when there’s audience applause you want to pick up on the back but since the back side of the Blumlein is inverted polarity but the omnis are not you’d think they wouldn’t mix well. But if you space the omnis wide enough the cancellations are vague and random enough so you still get a pretty specific stereo applause track! It can sound great. Use your ears and listen for anomalies muting and unmuting the supplementary omnis.

There are three types of headphone technologies:

The first is the most common: moving coil. It’s like a miniature loudspeaker, where a surface moves forward and backward attached to a coil or bobbin that moves in the field of a magnet. It’s a lot like a dynamic mike in reverse.

The second is “Planar Magnetic”. Where current runs through a printed circuit attached to a thin film or diaphragm. . The thin film rests in a magnetic field provided by permanent magnets. Potentially planar magnetic is much cleaner than moving coil as the diaphragm is much lighter and easier to move and more linear.

Lastly there’s electrostatic. Check out my review at

David is one of my musical heroes. “Almost Cut My Hair” is an anthem of my generation. “Wooden Ships” brings tears to my eyes even today. “Suite Judy Blue Eyes” so joyous.

DC was creating through to only a few years ago. I use his album “Croz” to show off my system. His voice was first rate even at the age of ~77! I use “What’s Broken” as a demo from 2496 version purchased from HD Tracks.

These ten-turn pots can be logged in steps from 1 to 1000! Precision and repeatable to less than 0.1 dB. Mmmm, mmmm, good.
