The small mike in front of Ana Caram is a PA mike I used to feed this 60 foot by 40 foot room with 3 stories high ceiling! In order to get ambience.

This looks like a fun session. Was the Blumlein the sole pickup for the band? Did you have to work with the musician’s positioning to achieve optimal balance?

Thanks. The mike is a highly modified AKG C-24 in Blumlein. Ana is singing on the back of the mike with her guitar. Dave’s upright bass is also picked up on the back of the mike. Percussion and other instruments on the front of the mike. So I’ve positioned everyone optimally to get just the right balance and depth! A true one mike recording in a big, beautiful room.

Those RCA designed studios are the best!

John Windt at Motown stole the idea of a flat relected response from RCA. I had no idea how good this was until after I moved to San Francisco and found to my horror that many of the microphone techniques I had used at Motown didn’t work at Wally Heider’s!
